New Horizon Special School is a private school in Ghana, West Africa, for people with intellectual disabilities and autism. Founded by the remarkable Mrs. Salome Francois in January 1972, the school started with just 3 students on Salome's verandah and has grown to serve 130+ students aged 4 to 40+ years. The school provides day school education for children aged 6-18 and vocational training and employment for adults (18 and over) who have intellectual disability. Persons with other disabilities such as spastic, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, and hearing impairment are also admitted so long as their primary disability is learning difficulty. Salome's daughter Helen, who was developmentally disabled, inspired this life-changing institution. Through Helen, thousands of other children have benefited from specialized education. The school is legally registered as a voluntary, non-profit making and charitable institution with the Ministry of Education. Our aim is to not only provide a well-rounded education for children and adults with special needs in a safe and caring environment, but also to develop each person's potential to the full so that he or she can lead a productive and satisfying life. New Horizon has built an international reputation, collaborating with institutions worldwide.
Founded on the epiphany: 'So that through Helen, other children like her too may benefit.' New Horizon believes in developing each person's potential to the full so that he or she can lead a productive and satisfying life. We provide well-rounded education for children and adults with special needs in a safe and caring environment. We combat social stigma associated with intellectual disabilities and bring hidden children into the light of education and opportunity. We believe every person with intellectual disability deserves education, training, dignity, and the chance to contribute to society.
