The school’s first principal was James Picot, who began his leadership at just 18 years old. In 1896, the school became known as Wesleyan Collegiate School. In 1905, John Mensah Sarbah, an alumnus, founded a new school named Mfantsipim. The name comes from "Mfantsefo-apem," which refers to a gathering of scholars for change. Later that year, the two schools merged under the Methodist church, adopting the name Mfantsipim. In 1931, the school relocated to its current site at Kwabotwe Hill in Cape Coast.
